Release notes

Much like the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac had two separate and distinct periods of success - the first was during the late Sixties and was based in Britain; the second started on the other side of the Atlantic in the mid-Seventies, with a radically changed sound and image, and propelled the group to worldwide megastardom. The group was originally formed in 1967 by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Peter Green, who enlisted
drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie and thus derived the band’s name (although McVie was initially reluctant to join, and almost didn’t). The classic and most successful line-up of the late Sixties featured Green, Fleetwood and McVie plus Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer; these five men (all British) stayed together from August 1968 till May 1970. After a long period of numerous personnel changes, the second classic Mac line-up emerged in January 1975, and stayed intact into the Eighties: three Britons (Fleetwood, McVie and wife Christine McVie) were augmented by an American duo (Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks). The first Fleetwood Mac were at the forefront of Britain’s late Sixties blues boom. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1968, reached No.4 and logged 37 weeks on the UK LP chart. Further LP successes with Mr
Wonderful, Pious bird of good omen and Then play on were accompanied by even greater acceptance on the UK singles chart: 1969 brought a No.1 smash with the entrancing, now legendary instrumental Albatross, followed by two No.2 hits with Man of the world and Oh well - all three tracks were written by Green. His departure in 1970 left a major hole in the band - after one mainly instrumental album, his unique talent went into retirement for several years, before he re-emerged in 1979 with a series of low-key solo releases. Spencer joined a religious sect in 1971, leaving another major gap. By this time, former Chicken Shack singer Christine Perfect (who had just become Christine McVie) had joined Fleetwood Mac. From 1970 till 1975, a succession of personnel changes dogged the band. Of all the players who came and went, the most notable was US
guitarist/singer Bob Welch, who later enjoyed solo success on the American charts. During this transitional period, Fleetwood Mac faded into obscurity in the UK (apart from a 1973 re-issue of Albatross, which flew to No.2) but gradually built up a live following in the States. The American influence reached its completion in 1975 with the arrival of a previously unknown US boyfriend/girlfriend duo, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. With a new Californian rock sound, combining excellent vocal harmonies, irresistible melodies and fine individual performances, the new Fleetwood Mac gradually became a worldwide phenomenon. The 1975 Fleetwood Mac album reached the US No.1 position a year after release, fuelled by a series of hit singles. 1977’s Rumours LP - recorded while all the band members were breaking off romantic relationships - became one of the biggest sellers of all time. 1979’s Tusk and 1982’s Mirage were also hugely successful.
