Much can be said about Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K.'s
flagship vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and
tabloids seemed to focus on her rowdy behavior and heavy
consumption of alcohol, but fans and critics alike
embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and
distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals. Her platinum-
selling breakthrough album, Frank (2003), elicited
comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan
to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. Interestingly enough,
despite her strong cockney accent and vernacular, one can
often hear aspects of each of those singers' vocal
repertoire in Winehouse's own voice. Nonetheless, her
allure has been her songwriting -- almost always deeply
personal, but best known for its profanity and brutal
candor.

Born to a taxi-driving father and pharmacist mother,
Winehouse grew up in the Southgate area of northern
London. Her upbringing was surrounded by jazz. Many of the
uncles on her mother's side were professional jazz
musicians, and even her paternal grandmother was
romantically involved with British jazz legend Ronnie
Scott at one time. While at home, she listened to and
absorbed her parents' selection of greats: Dinah
Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra among
others. However, in her teens, she was drawn to the
rebellious spirit of TLC, Salt-N-Pepa, and other American
R&B and hip-hop acts of the time.

At the age of 16, after she had been expelled from
London's Sylvia Young Theatre School, she caught her first
break when pop singer Tyler James, a schoolmate and close
friend, passed on her demo tape to his A&R, who was
searching for a jazz vocalist. That opportunity led to her
recording contract with Island Records. By the end of
2003, when she was 20 years old, Island had released her
debut album, Frank. With contributions from hip-hop
producer/keyboardist Salaam Remi, Winehouse's amalgam of
jazz, pop, soul, and hip-hop received rave reviews. The
album was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize as
well as two Brit awards, and its lead single, "Stronger
Than Me," won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary
Song.

Following Winehouse's debut, the accolades and inquiring
interviews appeared concurrently in the press with her
tempestuous public life. Several times she showed up to
her club or TV performances too drunk to sing a whole set.
In 2006, her management company finally suggested that she
enter rehab for alcohol abuse, but instead, she dumped the
company and transcribed the ordeal into the U.K. Top Ten
hit "Rehab," the lead single for her second, critically
acclaimed album, Back to Black. Containing evocative
productions from Salaam Remi and British DJ/multi-
instrumentalist Mark Ronson, the album somewhat abandoned
jazz, delving into the sounds of '50s/'60s-era girl group
harmonies, rock & roll, and soul. The fanfare over the
release was so great that it started to spill over onto
U.S. shores; several rappers and DJs made their own
remixes of various songs -- not to mention covers by
Prince and the Arctic Monkeys.

One month after Winehouse won Best Female Artist at the
Brit Awards in February 2007, Universal released Back to
Black in the U.S. The LP charted higher than any other
American debut by a British female recording artist before
it, and it remained in the Top Ten for several months,
selling a million copies by the end of that summer. Just
as in the U.K., she became the talk of the town, landing
on the covers of Rolling Stone and Spin magazines. Not
long afterward, though, Winehouse canceled her North
American tour. Early reports revealed that she was
entering rehab for alcohol and drug addiction, but her new
management denied the claims, stating it was due to severe
exhaustion. Her erratic behavior kept her and her new
husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, constantly in the tabloids
and on and off stages on both sides of the Atlantic, but
in late 2007 American fans were finally given a chance to
hear Winehouse's early work, with a slightly abbreviated
(two songs removed and one added) version of Frank.

There are only a handful of rock artists that have
proven to be as enduring and influential as Alice
Cooper has over the years. Name just about any hard
rock artist, and they've probably borrowed a thing or
two from Alice. And on his latest studio recording,
"Along Came A Spider" (issued via SPV Records on July
29), Alice has returned with a concept album with a
sinister streak.

"A dark and menacing album for dark and menacing times"
is perhaps the most fitting description for Alice's
25th studio album overall, as a chilling conceptual
thread runs through the songs, which are told through
the voice of a serial killer named Spider — one that
Alice describes as "an arachnophobic psychopath" (in
the song "Catch Me If You Can"). Alice, the master
storyteller, weaves a web of danger, intrigue and death
that rivals his best work.

Co-produced by Danny Saber, Greg Hampton and Alice
himself, "Along Came A Spider" manages to marry both
vintage and modern-day Alice. As theatrical as ever,
the album is a sonic combination of familiar Alice
musical elements from albums as diverse as "Billion
Dollar Babies" and "Brutal Planet", with the
storytelling of "Welcome To My Nightmare", capturing
the historic dark side of Alice in peak form, an
instantly recognizable presence that will be welcomed
by his fans. Joining Alice on the album are members of
his touring band — longtime Alice drummer Eric Singer,
bassist Chuck Garric, and guitarists Keri Kelli and
Jason Hook, with additional contributions from others,
including Saber, Hampton, and renowned backing vocalist
Bernard Fowler. Slash also lends some guitar style to
"Vengeance Is Mine".

Saber and Hampton co-wrote several of the album's songs
with Alice, while others were collaborations with
Alice's band members. Danny Saber, best known for his
role as member and producer of BLACK GRAPE, has also
worked with many other artists, including THE ROLLING
STONES, OZZY OSBOURNE, and DAVID BOWIE, while Greg
Hampton's been working on a new album project teaming
up Buckethead and Bootsy Collins.

Who else but Alice Cooper, with "Along Came A Spider",
would create a "love story" about a serial killer named
Spider? His trademark is wrapping his victims in silk,
and his victims are specifically chosen to feed his
hunger to kill. But, upon meeting his (possibly) last
victim, he falls in love with her and cannot kill to
complete his plan. That could be his demise.

Though it is often said about artists with as rich a
history as Alice that their newest albums capture the
essence of their greatest work, it may honestly be
proposed that "Along Came A Spider" does exactly that.
It's got hard rock with hooks, an Alice trademark
("Vengeance is Mine", "I Know Where You Live"), classic
balladry, another Alice trademark ("Killed by Love",
"Salvation"), and always with an overtone of evil, yet
another Alice tradmark. Throughout the album, Alice
BECOMES Spider, telling the story of a cold-blooded
killer to life vocally, as if this were the soundtrack
to an as-yet unmade horror film.

Guitar virtuoso Kelly Richey has written and coproduced an all-original
studio recording, Carry the Light, which will firmly grab the attention of
the press and music fans everywhere. Richey’s songwriting and vocals
underscore her powerful, take-no-prisoners guitar playing, firmly expressing
her genuine talent and versatility.

Carry the Light, released on her own Sweet Lucy Records, reflects every bit
of Richey’s stellar guitar tone and style, while propelling her into a new
light as a thoughtful and insightful singer/songwriter. The 11 tracks range
from personal reflection, contemplation and illumination to questioning the
world we live in, all the while capturing the defining sound of The Kelly
Richey Band.

“This CD was written with two dear friends: one is my guitar mentor, John
Redell, and the other, Steve Carroll, came to me as a guitar
student/songwriter,” says Richey. “Each week for four months, John and I got
together and hammered out song ideas. Many songs were passed on to Steve to
add either a chorus or bridge, or to strengthen the melody line. Steve also
sent songs he wrote based on ideas and concepts we discussed and John and I
constructed guitar parts to help make the songs come to life on the stage. I
was constantly challenged by John to grow as a guitarist, and challenged by
Steve to construct songs that stood alone with or without guitar wizardry.

“I recorded each song in demo form in my own studio over the summer,” recalls
Kelly. “After the basic framework of each song was constructed, I asked my
drummer, Shane Frye, to be there as we began pre-production, and with John
playing bass we’d jam to make sure that each song would transfer to the stage
and work as a three-piece band.”

Richey thought she would record the CD herself but soon realized she had a
much larger project on her hands and began seeking a studio and co-producer.
Rick Brantley ended up being the perfect complement. “Rick is a guitarist too
and has a guitar player’s dream studio,” says Richey. “I asked Rick to
co-produce the project because I knew I had taken the songs as far as I could
and needed an outside perspective to ensure that the CD sounded like the best
commercial release possible, while maintaining the character that it had when
written.

“Rick and I were a great fit. We decided that I needed to move away from such
a ‘live’ mentality and into a more studio frame of mind, so we chose to bring
in session players who could capture the foundational tracks with perfection
and speed; then, we could place the majority of our time in capturing the
best guitar and vocal performances that I could
produce.”

The result is Carry the Light, a compilation of thought provoking lyrics and
powerful sounds that The Kelly Richey Band can make their own and take to the
stage.

It takes courage to release the securityof the familiar
and embrace change. After five years of touring and
establishing themselves as "the most important folk
group to emerge from Boston since the early 60's"
(Boston Globe) , Crooked Still announced that cellist
Rushad Eggleston would leave the group in November of
2007. The band that had been drawing invitations from
huge events like the historic Newport and Telluride
Folk Festivals, and numerous rave reviews from
publications like USA Today and Interview Magazine,
was now on the cusp of a new musical chapter. The
quintet became five with the addition of fiddler
Brittany Haas and Tristan Clarridge on cello and
second fiddle. If the first album from the new
line-up is any indication, success for this young
band will be explosive. Crooked Still continues to
perform one of the most compelling forms of
alternative bluegrass and string band music today.

Still Crooked is an ensemble effort of inspired music
making that moves the bands' impossible to
pigeonhole style in new directions while honoring
their folk roots.Crooked Still's genre bending sound
is the combination of five distinctive talents who
are not content to limit themselves to any one
project or style of music. While Crooked Still is the
main band for these talented players, all are
involved in other projects including Aoife
O'Donovan's work with Solas and Sometymes Why and
Gregory Liszt's turn with the Bruce Springsteen's
Seeger Sessions Band.
